Use cl1p.net on forums

Many online forms limit the text you enter, or mess up its formatting. Use cl1p.net to post your text and then just add the URL to your forum post!

Code Changes

I just made a minor change to the home page. Example cl1p's used to be displayed as random characters. Now it will display a random word for the dictionary.

For example the example link used to look like http://cl1p.net/sadfjhaow now it is like http://cl1p.net/book.

Server Move complete

Cl1p.net has just completed a server move. For the past few months I’ve been running it out of my living room!

New Blog

I’ve moved the blog from cl1p.net to blogger. The main reason for this move is to get better feed back from you, cl1p.net users!

Traffic continues to build; cl1p.net now has a link on my.yahoo.com. Amazing.

So far the site is stable, with a few bugs found a fixed. Thanks to everyone who reported bugs.

I’ve added a new feature. Passwords can now restrict cl1p viewing. Just click the restrict views checkbox and enter in a password.

Have a feature idea? Let me know!

Why I created cl1p.net

I was testing a application and I ran into a familiar, and frustrating problem. For each test I needed to modify settings and gather test data from each machine. Because they where on a separate network, running different operating systems the only way to sync the settings was to print out a copy from my machine and then manually enter it on each test machine, at least that's how it was done when I joined the team.

I tried to speed things up by using FTP but did not have access to a ftp site. Also on some of the test machines. (Macs) I wasn't sure where the FTP client was or how to use it, I also tried webmail and that worked for most of the test machines, however some did not have a browser that could support my gmail account.

It was taking far too long just to move data between machines. There had to be a better way.

So I created cl1p.net and it has saved me tons of time. Now whenever I need to move test settings around I just open up a URL that starts with cl1p.net. (For example I used http://cl1p.net/mayhew/td ) and post my settings. Then from each test machine I enter in the same URL.

I hope you find cl1p.net as useful as I do. Enjoy.

Great day for hits!

Wow, a lot of things are in motion. First off I got a link on popurls.com. This is great because it’s a site that gets a lot of traffic. I’m not sure how long the link will be listed, but its been up for over 24 hours now and has sent me at least 200 hits.

I also noticed that some folks form live journal have started to use cl1p.net. This is unexpected and cool.

I got an e-mail from lifehacker.com. They are checking site, and I guess they could be submitting a story. That would be awesome.

Also I submitted the site to buzzshout.com.

Delicious links now sitting at 33. Tool appears to be the popular tag.

Today’s stats. (As of now) 544 hits, 170 unique 30 clips.

If everyday what like today I could sell ad space.

popurls.com

As a lark I submitted cl1p.net to popurls.com in the your pop section. And now I’m getting hits from popurls.com.

This could be big.

Welcome to building cl1p.net

This blog tracks the progress of cl1p.net, a website that I have built lets you copy and paste between computers. I believe that cl1p.net is an innovative and useful web site. My hope is that one day thousands of people will visit and use cl1p.net, and that It will improve there lives in some small way.

So I’ve build the site, everything works. Now what? How do I get people to use it? How do I get the word out? And how do I do this on my current marketing budget? (Which is zero dollars by the way.)

I’m going to start off by posting what has been done so far in terms of marketing.

Started promoting cl1p.net as the worlds largest notebook

Posted an entry on tradetricks.org

Tech Support

I use cl1p.net to help move settings. For example when I need to setup someone’s email I copy the settings to cl1p.net and then use them on the other guy’s machine. It’s great! I’ve also used it to move small files around when firewalls get in the way.

Check it out http://cl1p.net

Also posted a link on http://wiki.43folders.com under notebook software.

I also submitted a story to digg.com and a comment on slashdot.org. This is what happened.

Feb 28 - Slashdot / 43Folders
Unique IP's 107, Clips 17
March 1 - Digg.com
Unique IP’s 124, Clips 10

Not bad, but really just a trickle.

Not much happened until I noticed the Joel, from joelonsoftware.com has just started up joel.reddit.com. I quickly posted a link to clip and remained on the hope page for about a day

2413 Hits 432 Ip's and 81 Clips made.

That’s a bit better.

My stats for March came in at.

Unique Visitor (IP/Agent String) 974 Hits 3750

Still just a trickle. I figure I need 10000 unique visitors a month before I can start selling ad space. Which in itself will be another problem to conquer.
