I've stopped the upgrade for now. I ran into some issues on the new server and had to roll back. Everything is back to normal.

iPhone / iPod Touch support

Over the weekend I purchased an iPod touch, so of course the first thing I did was make cl1p compatible with my new device.

Now you can copy and paste to your iPhone. From a computer just enter in any URL that starts with cl1p.net and the paste.

From your iphone enter in the same URL to see the information you pasted.

Introducing cl1p - The office clipboard

Up to now you could use cl1p to copy and between any two computers that where connected to the internet. Now with cl1p - The office clipboard you can copy and paste between computers on your network, without sending data over the internet.

Along with greater security a number of new features have been added such as:

Full text searching
History on all cl1ps created
Full administrative controls

Improved Unicode support

Up till now non ASCII characters have not worked with cl1p.net. With the latest patch they should all work properly.

Please let me know if any characters do not work.

Site upgraded

I've just finished upgrading the site. A number of new features where installed.

1. Plain Text and Rich Text cl1ps have a status indicator which shows a cl1ps editable status.

Editable - You may edit this cl1p
Editing - You are editing this cl1p.
Read only - Someone else is editing this cl1p.

If you try to modify a cl1p that someone else is editing you will get a message. 'Failed to get lock on the cl1p.' In this case you need to wait until the status changes to editable. Once the cl1p is editable the content will update automatically to the latest value.

2. New Rich Text Editor

3. UI Improvements, all options except for keep for have been moved into an options popup.

4. E-mail retrieval for lost cl1p passwords.

5. Improved admin

I'm working on a big release for cl1p that will contain a lot of improvements.

Here is what I have done so far.

Adjustable Textarea on Message Board cl1ps
Improved Rich Text Editor
Cl1ps are automatically saved as you type.
Autoupdate of cl1ps. When another person changes a cl1p you are viewing your cl1p will update to reflect the change.
Simplified UI most options placed in a popup, menu bar removed.
Improved cl1p account screen with more information on your cl1ps.

Message Board and SSL

I've added some new features to cl1p:

First up is Message Board. You can now turn an cl1p into a message board. Just select message board in the cl1p type drop down menu.

You can set the title of the message board by entering a new title under options.
You can restrict forum management by setting a password under security. People can still add comments to the board, but you need the password to delete them.

Next is SSL. You can now purchase SSL cl1ps. These cl1ps have the same feature as standard cl1ps, with the addition of an secure SSL connection.

New Feature: Cl1p Types!

Now a cl1p can be more then just a text area. The cl1p type dropdown (in the top left corner) will let you change types.

First up is the Rich Text editor type. You can now create cl1p's with rich formating options .

I have many more types of cl1ps. If you have any suggestions on a cl1p type you would like, let me know!

Eve Online - As a workout

Like many computer programmers I sit at a desk all day. My diet is ok, (No fast food, lots of home made feasts, thanks to my wife) but working out is always a problem.

My biggest problem with working out is that it is boring. Going through the same motions of exercise, over and over. I can't stand it. All I can think about is how silly the whole process is. I need a distraction. I've tried watching TV, and reading but I find that these are too distracting, or boring.

But then I brought my laptop up and put it beside the exercise bike, and played eve online as I worked the bike, did push ups, sit ups and free weights. An entire hour of workout can go by without me hardly noticing. Normally I can't stand more then 20 minutes.

This is because Eve online only requires input from you once in a while. Most of the time is spent moving from place to place. With the auto pilot handling the details. So it simple to set the autopilot, then do some push ups. Get back on the bike, do some mining, sell the ore, do some sit ups, etc. It's the perfect distraction.

It works great! I've just started my new eve online workout. I'll let you know how it works out long term.

Adsense, not making sense

I just found out something really interesting. cl1p.net makes about the same in cpm as a top 50 blog. (I made $1.37cpm last year, he made $1.39cpm) This is really interesting, because I always thought that adsense works way better on blogs then it does on tool sites.

But this must be wrong. We both target a tech audience, perhaps the audience matters more then the content of the site?

A programmers start page

You can use cl1p.net as a start page for programmers. As a web application developer I have to access a lot of machines in the office. Most of them are by IP and some have long cumbersome names. I also have to access the web apps that I'm working on from different browsers.

My solution was to use cl1p.net to make a simple HTML start page. You can see it here.

Create your own, just follow these steps.

1. Pick a URL that starts with cl1p.net. ( i picked http://cl1p.net/robs/startpage )

2. In the Textarea write the HTML. I just use a simple table and links, but you could use any HTML you wanted.

3. Add a password, change the keep for to something longer then a week and Click save, you will see a message saying (Page was saved).

4. In the top right hand corner you see a link http://cl1p.net/robs/startpage. Click on that link to see the rendered HTML.

5. What happened here is that you are now looking at http://d.cl1p.net/robs/startpage. This will only show you the raw data, and since its HTML we see an HTML page.

6. Set http://d.cl1p.net/robs/startpage as the homepage.

Bam! There you go. A programmers start page.

New years eve, the time critical holiday

As a time critical guy I'm always worried about what time it is, and how am I doing according to the schedule in my head. I always want to be on time. I hate being late.

For everyday of the year I keep my obsession under wraps. It's not polite to be looking at your watch all the time.

But for one day, I let it fly. New years eve is when for once, everyone is concerned about the time.

And its great.

I recently installed ubuntu 6.1 and I love it. I LOVE IT. This is the best user linux distro EVER. EVER!

I've been using Linux for years as a sever but never been able to stomach it on the desktop. I tried Red Hat, then Fedora, and well I could not get anything else to work.

But ubuntu works! Holy cow!

The installation is a wet dream. It takes away everything I don't care about, (Partitioning, package selection, etc) and just installs what I need.

Top things I freaked out about when installing ubuntu.

- SOUND WORKS
- Boots to a usable desktop
- Looks great
- JUST ONE CD
- wireless works!
- Firefox 2.0 installed, and WORKING
- apt-get works!
- Tutorials work!
- sudo WORKS out of the box

If you have not tried ubuntu, then for the LOVE OF GOD, try it!

Banned from warcraft

Well my account was banned, I'm guessing that blizzard found out that I payed someone to play my account for me. I wasn't sure if that violated the terms, but I guessed it was OK to have someone else play my character.

I thought you might be interested as to why I did this, I'm sure you have heard this before, but who knows maybe I'll make the difference.

I'm a casual player, I can't spend more then an one evening a week playing. I find that most players are level 60, but after a one year of playing I finally got to level 40, but leveling was getting slower and slower, and groups where getting harder and harder to find. I wanted to play, but I could not find anyone to play with.

So when I saw that I could pay to have my account leveled for me I jumped at the chance. For once I would be level 60, I could play with everyone else. It would take another year to hit 60 on my own (And by then everyone else would be level 70).

I've put a lot of money and time into my account, and I'm sad to see it go. I'm sorry I paid for power leveling, but I didn't see another way.

I'm brining this blog back online. As an independent software vendor its critical that I spend more time on getting the word out about my creations. If I don't talk about cl1p.net who will?

I'm joining a long line of software developers who blog, everyone from the all powerful Joel, and Eric to the not as much known, (but respected in my book) Lord Elph.

So what is the blog about? Well for the most part it's about me, a software developer, married, full time employed, and trying his hand at running an microISV on the side. It's also about life, programming, and getting rich off of adsense. (Yeah right)

I've just uploaded the latest version. New features.

1. cl1p accounts.

You can now create an account with cl1p! The first account feature is the tracking of cl1ps. When logged in any cl1p that you create or edit is added to your cl1p account. Though this account you can track your cl1ps!

2. Tittle

The title of each cl1p can now be set in the title box on each cl1p.

3. Random Cl1p's.

Need a blank cl1p in a hurry? Just type in r.cl1p.net in your browser. You will be redirected to a blank cl1p.

Live Clipboard

I just read the post at Ray Ozzie's blog where he talks about live clipboards, and cutting and pasting between everything - web-app to web-app, web-app to desktop, desktop to web-app. Give it a read if you haven't yet - its really interesting.

Some people have written that cl1p.net is the first answer to the live clipboard question, And in a way it is, you can now move text and small files between PC - PC. It's no where near Ray's vision, but it is a start.

I'm still working on implementing cl1p accounts and other features I listed below. But I think once that's done I'll start to look at ways to copy and paste parts of websites into cl1p.

Oh and still waiting for that buyout offer Ray. :)
